RRR’s Naatu Naatu and The Elephant Whisperers Bag Oscars

After having won the Golden Globes for the Best Original Song, Naatu Naatu song from Telugu film RRR has won the award for the Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

RRR directed by SS Rajamouli stars N.T Rama Rao Jr. (Jr. NTR), Ram Charan, Alia Bhat in the lead. Lyricist Chandrabose and MM Keeravani, the composer of Naatu Naatu received the awards amidst the cheering fans. M.M Keeravani sang a rendition of The Carpenters’ hit Top of the World as his acceptance speech.

The award is a proud moment for the Telugu and the Indian film fraternity. Naatu Naatu becomes the first ever Indian song and film to win an Oscar. The song is set in British Indian period and was shot in Kyiv, Ukraine. It features an enthralling soundtrack along with the synchronised steps of the lead actors Jr. NTR and Ram Charan.

RRR is making waves globally even a year after its release with the film’s release in Japan and had its largest screening at Los Angeles. Naatu Naatu beat several other nominations – Lift Me Up from Black Panther, Hold my Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, Applause from Tell it Like a Woman and This is life from Everything, Everywhere at Once.

The Elephant Whisperers, a short documentary directed Kartiki Gonslaves also bagged the Oscar for the Best Documentary Short Subject, taking India’s Oscar count to two. The Netflix documentary was released in December 2022. The documentary takes us through the journey of a couple who babysits orphaned elephants and their special bond.
